The Baker Family papers document the personal and professional activities of Harry F. Baker and Catherine “Kitty” Baker and their children, Harry Jr., and Vaughn who lived in Salisbury, Maryland. The materials date from 1914-2013, with the bulk of the material, conveyed through photographs, dating from 1944-1955. Visually, the photographic images document the daily activities of the Baker Family, seen through the lens of Harry F. Baker. Also included, is a scrapbook and an expense book focusing on Kitty Baker’s art, Vaughn Baker’s Wicomico High School diploma from 1961 and an autograph book from 1955, an oral history by Harry F. Baker, and other ephemera. In addition, is genealogy research of the Baker Family, including manuscripts, a draft, ledger notes, and research notes by Vaughn Baker.

Baltimore Sun Magazine

The Baltimore Sun Magazine was produced and included in the Sunday edition of The Baltimore Sun until 1996; the magazine featured a pictorial section on various topics and location of the state of Maryland. Specifically, photographs or photo-stories were featured in each edition. The March 22, 1981 edition, features the photographs of Peter M. Tilghman. Tilghman, a Crisfield native, depicts the town in various scopes including local businesses such as oyster shucking, dry goods at Horsey Brothers, a shirt factory, and an early Harley Davidson motorcycle shop. Smith Island, the people and the landscape are featured in the April 24, 1983 edition of the magazine. The corresponding description, authored by Tom Horton, recollects his encounters with the island residents from the late 1970s including Waterman, Jennings Evans, and Reverand Henry Zollinhoffer.

Baseball in Crisfield collection

This digital collection was collected by Frank Rhodes and documents baseball in Crisfield, Maryland from 1926 to 1994, though primarily in the 1940s and 1950s and also includes a photograph of an 1892 team reproduced in a later newspaper article. The 86-image collection includes many photographs, including one of the Negro League team Crisfield Stars, newspaper articles, team stock certificates (including one for Parksley, Virginia), and written narratives, such as the 1994 article by Scorchy Tawes.

Crisfield Traditions in Time Collection

The Crisfield Traditions in Time collection was created during a program undertaken by the American Folklife Center field school for cultural documentation and cosponsored by Salisbury University and the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art. During this summer 2003 field school, folklorists interviewed, photographed, and collected materials from residents of Crisfield, Maryland to document the maritime arts, tradition, and history. The project created 46 audio tapes, over 800 photographs, and extensive field notes (and participant releases) during interviews with seafood-business owners and workers (including Spanish speaking migrant workers from Mexico), schoolteachers, watermen, city officials, religious leaders, truck drivers, parks and marina managers, and boat captains. The collection is one of two copies and originals are kept with the Ward Museum.

Guy Peck collection

The Guy Peck collection documents Peck’s devotion to history through the documents he acquired and includes those on education and business practices. Records date from 1795-1979 with the bulk of the material dating from 1915-1940. Specifically, records document the education and life of Conrad or Conard Williams, an African American man from Eden, Maryland who studied at the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, and the secretarial training of Elva Chandler who attended Goldey College in Wilmington, Delaware. Monetary transactions are also documented through a wide variety of receipts, goods purchased and accounting practices from different Eastern Shore families including Hitch and Ruark. Military research on the 1943 Algiers Campaign and correspondence from an enlistee to his mother during the Korean War is also included.

The Papers of J. Millard Tawes consist of the political and personal papers of J. Millard Tawes and of historic Maryland records. The collection documents Tawes’ career as a politician from 1930-1979, including his service as the 54th Governor of Maryland from 1959-1967. It contains speeches, correspondence, photographs, publications and ephemera offering insight into fifty years of state and national politics. The collection includes Tawes’ speeches on the Freedom Riders and on the Cambridge Riots of 1963. It also includes correspondence between Tawes and Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.

Willis Tull papers

The Willis Tull papers include ephemera related to the Milbourne and Townsend familes of the Delmarva Peninsula. There is an excerpt from the 1931 text "Tidewater Maryland" which notes Ralph Milbourne, as well as scans of documents related to genealogical work done on the Milbourne and Townsend familes. There is an insert article from a magazine on George A. Townsend. Correspondence on "Crisfield, Maryland" letterhead addressed to "Myrtle" from an unknown writer is also included. There is the 1957 commencement and baccalaureate program from the State Teachers College, Towson, Maryland. Albert Richard Tull is mentioned in "Thatcham-Then and Now", 1983. Included is program from Maryland's Four Hundred Monument Rededication and Colonial Ancestors Roster, both from 1992. Finally, there is a copy of a colonial pamphlet from 1659, reprinted in 2002.

The papers of Woodrow T. Wilson are a comprehensive documentation of his extensive research conducted to author his four-volume series on Crisfield, Maryland and Somerset County, Maryland as well as numerous articles written for the Crisfield Times. Manuscripts, proof copies, and unpublished materials authored by Wilson and his associates are also included.
